The Dead Spot in Row K

Personal Statement · Wren Halloran-Osei · Intended Major: Acoustical Engineering

The first note Mr. Delacroix-Finch ever asked me to listen for was one I couldn't hear. He pressed A4 on the gym's battered upright, held it, and said, "Hear that wobble? Like a slow wave under the note?" I heard nothing. He pressed it again and again until, on maybe the fortieth try, the sound seemed to *breathe*. That was beating, two strings a hair apart in pitch, fighting each other. I was sixteen, and I had just discovered that sound has a texture you can learn to see with your ears.

The Apprenticeship

I'd signed up for the spring music-department job because it paid $12 an hour to move chairs. Mr. Delacroix-Finch, a retired tuner who volunteered every Thursday, needed someone to hold the flashlight. By April I was holding the tuning lever instead. We spent eleven Thursdays on that upright, and I learned to count beats per second, to tell a flat string from a sharp one, and to be patient with an instrument that never stays fixed.

He also taught me to distrust my assumptions. "The piano is only half of it," he'd say. "The room plays too."

Row K

I didn't understand that until the spring concert. I was sitting in Row K, seat 12, listening to my friend Priya play a Chopin nocturne she had practiced for months, and the sound just vanished. The notes were there, but thin and hollow, as if someone had thrown a blanket over the stage. I moved two rows forward and it came back. At intermission I moved back and the dead spot was still there.

Most people would have blamed the performance. I knew Priya hadn't played any differently, so I blamed the room.
