Percent Change: Up, Down, and Back Again

Larkspur Learning Hub · Grade 7 Math · Prepared by Desmond Achterberg

Name: ______________________ Date: ______________

The Big Idea

Percent change tells you how much a quantity grew or shrank compared with where it started. Always divide by the *original* amount, never the new one.

> Percent change = (new − original) ÷ original × 100

A positive answer is an *increase*. A negative answer is a *decrease*. For a discount or markup, you can also multiply: a 15% discount means you pay 85% of the price, so multiply by 0.85. A 35% markup means you pay 135%, so multiply by 1.35.

Worked Example

A pair of sneakers goes from $40 to $50. What is the percent change?

The prompt

Create a Doc practice worksheet on percent increase, percent decrease, discounts and markups for Grade 7. Include a short explanation with a worked example, 12 exercises that get harder, one real-world word problem about a school cooking club's monthly cookie sales, a challenge question about raising and then lowering a price by the same percent, and an answer key at the end.

Make it yours

  • Change the details in the prompt to fit teachers & tutors.
  • For example, change it so that it covers adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators for Grade 5 and the word problem is about sharing pizza slices at a soccer team party.
  • Ask for edits in plain words: tone, colors, length, layout or data.
  • Share the result by link or export it when you are done.
